 Performance Hunter Championships 2016

For spectators it was a beautiful course, themed like a stage setting, full of variety with multi- coloured obstacles, flowers, with the RDS farm animals, a fox, a round tower, an enormous spider web, stone druids, monastic crosses, white stone walls, red gates, flimsy rustic poles, no two fences alike, and added this year was the specially built 1916 fence featuring the General Post Office, with the proclamation on the other side.

Clearly for the younger ponies, aged 5 to 7, (we’ll call them Juniors) it was a testing challenge. But these Connemaras and their riders had been exceptionally well prepared by their training and qualifiying outings for this Championship and it was a joy to watch the majority get safely around and see half a dozen clears too. Emily McGowan with her Galway bred 7yr old gelding, Rathbane Legend (Tulira Roebuck X Ballyglass Lily), gained the highest points awarded in this competition which allocates marks for jump, ride and conformation. This was a double for this accomplished rider who had also taken the Junior Champion’s Cup last year with Benny Liath.

Reserve Junior Champion was Gilobrien Prince (Glenayre Silver Fox X Annagh Lucky Star) ridden by Orla O’Brien who has obviously made this Sligo bred Gelding an honorary O’Brien family member!

The Senior Performance Hunter Class made a prompt start as soon as results had been announced for the Juniors.
