The recent sudden death of Breda Horan, of Castlegar, Galway, took place on 9 January. Breda had shared a love for Connemara ponies with her late husband Billy for many years and they showed Connemaras in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. Breda successfully ran Rosedale Equestrian Centre in the late 1980’s and ‘90’s with her family. After Billy’s passing some years ago Breda continued to attend Shows, Sales, Inspections and Fairs or any event connected with the ponies, throughout Co. Galway and in Mayo, Clare, and Roscommon (her birthplace.) She was also a regular Pony Judge throughout the country. Lively, knowledgeable, forthright, and with obvious expertise, she was always fun and engaging to meet. Breda showed an unparalleled respect for the Connemara pony and she delighted in the showing success of her mare Kilmeen Jane (Cloonisle Cashel X Rhylin Saoirse) in recent years. As she never drove a car, her family and her many showing friends rallied round to drive herself and her pony to local shows. In recent times Breda regularly raised money for charity by raffling her fine home-baked cakes at these outings. Condolences are due to her daughter Geraldine and son Gaybriel. She will be sadly missed by all her pony pals.
